GMO Analysis
|
| |
According to the European regulations on
genetically modified (GM) foods, a product is subject to
mandatory labeling if it consists of, or is derived from
genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The threshold for
labeling is 0.9% of each ingredient for EU-authorized GMOs.
This threshold is 0.5% for GMOs not authorized for marketing
in Europe but having successfully passed all safety assessments.
The new regulations relate to food, feed, flavorings, and
additives and require full traceability systems throughout
the entire production chain. Accurate and high-performance
tools are required for the quantification of the GM material
contained in all the different matrices from the seed to
the final product. Real-time PCR is the gold standard used
for GMO detection and quantification in foods. |
| Most of the GM crops currently available
are maize and soya. They account for more than 80% of the
total GMO-planted area worldwide. About 30,000 ingredients
today contain maize and soya in their formulation and are
affected by GMO traceability and labeling. |
| Bio-Rad iQ-Check GMO kits provide a simple
decision-making solution for manufacturers concerned by
maize and soya ingredient labeling. iQ-Check GMO are ready-to-use
kits based on real-time PCR. The kits enable reliable and
accurate detection and quantification of the level of GMO
presence in each sample: from raw material to processed
food. |
 |
iQ-Check GMO Detection and Quantification Principle
|
| |
According to European regulations, the genetically
modified organism (GMO) content is determined as a percentage
of the GM DNA present in the sample and the total maize
or soya DNA content. |
| The GM DNA is detected by the screening
of a special sequence, the promoter p35S, present in most
transformation events in GM crops. |
| iQ-Check screen GMO p35S/tNos kit detects,
in parallel with the p35S sequence, a terminal sequence,
tNos, present in most unauthorized GMOs on the market. |
| GM DNA is always detected and quantified
in the presence of an artificial sequence called the internal
control. This sequence is included in the amplification
mix provided in the kit and is used to assess the efficiency
of the amplification reaction. |
| Total maize and soya DNA content is determined
by the presence of a specific plant reference gene. |
| The quantification standards included in
the iQ-Check GMO quantification kits enable precise determination
of the GM DNA/total maize or soya DNA ratio. |

GMO Extraction System
|
|
 |
A reliable genetically modified organism (GMO) testing
result is highly dependent on the quality of the DNA extracted
from a sample for analysis by real-time PCR. Food and plant
samples are extremely heterogeneous; they contain many different
compounds, such as fats and polysaccharides, which can lead
to suboptimal DNA extraction and processing. |
| The Bio-Rad DNA extraction system consistently
provides the user with high-quality DNA, free of any material
that could interfere with downstream applications such as
PCR, and is specifically suited to the treatment of GMO-related
matrices. |
